The shock and chaos after a car accident can make it difficult to think clearly. It helps to be prepared, by keeping handy a list of the information you need to exchange with the other driver after an accident. You and your Kentucky car accident attorney may need to get in touch with these individuals to enforce your right to compensation for any losses you sustained. These may include medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. After you get proper medical care, be sure to talk to the other driver and exchange this information.

What Information Should I Exchange With the Other Driver After an Accident?

Name and Contact Information for All Parties

You should collect the full names and contact information for every individual involved in the accident. That includes drivers, owners, passengers, and potential witnesses. Make sure to get address, home and cell phone numbers, and email addresses. It’s important to have as many options as possible to communicate with these individuals. Having the home address for a potential party to a lawsuit is critical. That person will need to be officially served court documents.

If the owner of a vehicle is a company, get these details as well. There may be vicarious liability issues for an employee who gets into an accident while acting within the scope of employment.

Information on Vehicles Involved in the Accident

The details of all vehicles in the incident are also essential. Jot down the model, make, color, year, vehicle identification numbers, and license plate numbers. You may also note any unique characteristics, such as rims, a specialized paint job, decals, or scratches and dents.

Insurance Details

Under Kentucky law, all drivers must purchase certain minimum insurance coverage, including:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per person per accident;
  • $50,000 bodily injury for all persons per accident;
  • $10,000 property damage liability; and,
  • $10,000 personal injury protection.

You should obtain the insurance information for all drivers involved in the accident. You can get details, including the policy number, from the insurance card.

Photos

Besides the above information, you should also take cell phone photos of the damage to all vehicles involved and of the scene of the accident. These can be extremely helpful in later dealings with the insurance companies.
